Join exhibiting artist Kait James in conversation with Taungurung curator, artist and writer, Kate ten Buuren as they discuss the social, political and artistic contexts of Kait's bold new exhibition Red Flags.

Kait James is a proud Wadawurrung artist whose work boldly challenges stereotypical representations of Indigenous culture, drawing from both her Indigenous and Anglo heritage. Through her art, she critiques and subverts the often narrow and homogenised depictions of Aboriginal identity in Australia, offering a deeper, more nuanced
exploration of history, culture, and self-determination.
Since beginning her professional practice in 2018, Kait has mounted several solo exhibitions at prominent venues such as the Warrnambool Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ballarat, Geelong Gallery, Neon Parc, and the Koorie Heritage Trust. In addition to her gallery shows, she has contributed to public art projects of various scales across Victoria, reinforcing her commitment to making art that engages the public in critical conversations.
Kate ten Buuren is a Taungurung artist and curator interested in contemporary visual art, film, stories and the future. She is a founding member of First Nations arts collective this mob, and grounds her practice in self-determination, self-representation and collectivism.
Most recently, Kate worked as Senior Curator at MAP Co and has previously held curatorial positions at ACMI and the Koorie Heritage Trust. Kate's projects include exhibitions such as The Blak Infinite co-curated with Kimberley Moulton, How I See It: Blak Art & Film, and Collective Movements co-curated with Maya Hodge and N'arweet Carolyn Briggs.
