Drawing on visual protest traditions such as women’s suffrage campaign banners, this discussion explores how the works in Changemakers make visible the ongoing challenges women face, including violence and inequality. It also considers how textile and craft practices can reclaim power and political agency within artistic forms that have long been marginalised.
Changemakers is a travelling exhibition featuring eight textile banners by craftivist Tal Fitzpatrick. This event offers insight into the ideas and social justice themes that underpin the exhibition. Fitzpatrick’s work celebrates and subverts clichéd ideas of needlecraft and other so‑called ‘women’s work’, using these traditions to draw attention to contemporary issues.

Tal Fitzpatrick is an Australian artist, craftivist and researcher. Her textile-based practise is influenced by the work of her paternal grandmother, Australian artist Dawn Fitzpatrick. Best known for her work in the field of craftivism she has co-led a number of global craftivism projects tackling social, political and environmental issues.
